3 Bathroom Upgrades for Better Accessibility

Improving your bathroom’s accessibility doesn’t have to require a full renovation. Whether you are aging in place or have mobility issues, there are upgrades that can improve your home’s accessibility and make everyday tasks easier. From a shower sliding door to a walk in tub, here are a few upgrades to consider.

Install a Sliding Shower Door

A sliding shower door can make it much easier to get into a shower. You won’t have to worry about getting caught up in shower curtains or trying to move around a hinged door in a small space. They are also great if you have a corner shower, as you can get corner sliding doors. If you are replacing a combination bath and shower with just a shower, it's much easier (and safer) than stepping over a bathtub wall to get in and out of the shower.

Look Into Walk In Tubs

On the other hand, if you prefer baths, you might want to consider a walk in bathroom tub. It’s excellent for anyone with mobility issues, as you can simply open the tub door and step in. Low-threshold entrances, grab bars, and non-slip surfaces provide additional security. These features enhance safety while promoting independence. Plus, you can find tubs with whirlpools and other hydrotherapy options, like massaging jets. These can relieve muscle tension and encourage relaxation after a hard day.

Upgrade to Functional Sinks

Upgraded sinks can help with accessibility and overall functionality. It might be as simple as installing 72 inch double sink vanities for more room and a second sink, giving you more time if you share a bathroom without tying up the sink. Outside of the bathroom, if access to the kitchen sink is a problem, consider a farmhouse sink. The deep basins encourage a more ergonomic posture while washing dishes, and offer better accessibility than traditional sinks.
