3 Scary Good Home Maintenance Tips

Prepping your home for cooler weather doesn’t have to be scary. With some time and tools, you can prevent future issues from creeping up. Here are three maintenance tips to avoid home “horror” stories.

Dust the Cobwebs

From scattered tools to abandoned gear, an unorganized garage can be a scary sight. Whether your garage is your workspace or simply a place to park the car, the early season’s mild weather is the perfect time to clear out summer supplies and make space for cold-weather staples.

  • First, sort your belongings and identify the items you want to keep, donate, and discard.
  • Next, customized cabinet garage storage solutions can help you store and organize everything from seasonal decorations to sports equipment.
  • Finally, dedicate space for the fall and winter tools you want to keep on hand, such as leaf-clearing and snow-removal tools.

Avoid Nightmare Gutters

Fall foliage is stunning this time of year, but if allowed to build up, it can cause a monster headache down the road. Cleaning your gutters at least twice a year (in both spring and fall) can ensure your gutters properly drain.

  • There are plenty of ways to clean your gutters. If you prefer staying on the ground, find tools with extended attachments to reach the gutter nooks and crannies. If you opt for a ladder, a handheld scoop, a leaf blower, or a power washer will do the trick.
  • Once clean, consider installing gutter guards to prevent future build-up.

Say No to System Horror Stories

Hearing things go bump in the night? That may be your home’s essential systems. While many appliances make some sounds even when new, excessive sounds may signal it's time to maintain your home’s electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

  • Keep your home’s electric hot water heaters running smoothly by flushing or cleaning them out at least once a year. Draining your tank will help prevent the buildup of sediment, rust, and corrosion, ensuring many years of hot water.
  • For clean and clear airflow, replace your HVAC filters every three to six months (or more, depending on the type of filter). If you’re unsure if your filter needs replacing, hold it up to the light. If light doesn’t pass through, it's time for a replacement. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced the filter, now is a good time.
