4 Projects to Make Your Home Safer This Summer

Making your home safer doesn’t have to be hard. Whether you’re expecting a baby, already have a toddler, have grandchildren, or just want to improve your home’s safety, there are projects you can do this summer. From using deck boards composite instead of wood for a deck to safely storing tools, try these DIY projects to keep yourself and guests safe.

A Deck with No Splinters

Picture this: You’re walking around barefoot in the summer on your deck, getting ready to enjoy the sun, when you step on a splinter. It’s one of the disadvantages of a wooden deck. If you use composite deck boards instead, you get nearly all of the advantages of a wood deck without the disadvantages. Composite boards don’t rot, which can be another safety concern. They also don’t create splinters and don’t attract insects. It still weathers like wood, and is highly scratch-, fade-, and stain-resistant.

Store Your Tools Safely

Tools can be a hazard. Sharp saws, heavy hammers, and many other tools need to be safely stored away so you and others aren’t accidentally hurt just by brushing past them in the garage. Tool storage could be a tool chest on wheels or a wall-spanning cabinet system to hold all of your tools. It keeps them off the ground and out of your way. Plus, you’ll know exactly where your tools are, so you can stay organized and easily find the right tool for the job.

Better Front Door Locks

One of your first lines of safety for your home is the lock on your front door. Having a good lock is essential, but what happens when you do need to let someone in, but you’re away from home? You can use locks that have a keypad and give out passcodes, or you can use a Wi-Fi-enabled lock to unlock your front door from anywhere you have internet access. It gives you far better control than just having a key, providing safety on your terms, and it is especially great if you combine it with a video doorbell so you can see who is at the door and let them in.

Safely Secure Firearms

If you don’t have a good storage solution for your firearms or are storing them in a decorative glass cabinet, they could pose risks to children or guests. Look for a gun safe on sale at one of your favorite home improvement stores, and you can get a secure storage solution. Plus, depending on the safe you choose, you can get enough room to store ammo and other gear inside the safe, too. There are also hidden safe options if you only need to secure one small firearm.
