4 Unique Ideas for Your Home’s Flex Space

Have an extra room in your house that you don’t know what to do with? Maybe it’s a second living room upstairs or a basement room too big to be a bedroom. Either way, it’s time to level up that flex space. From adding a sliding interior door and gym equipment to the room or using it as a WFH office, here are four ideas for upgrading your home.

Turn It Into a Home Office

With the rise in work-from-home jobs, a home office would almost be too good to be true. Except, with your flex space, it’s easy to create a spot where you can get your work done and still be comfortable.

Start with your workstation itself. A high-quality desk is a must if you’re spending 8 hours a day hard at work. Also, install plenty of shelves and cupboards to keep any materials you might need and some decorations to lighten up the space.

Be sure to hide any extra wiring, such as power or internet cords.

Then, grab a chair for your desk and maybe a lounge seat for when you need a quick recharge away from your computer, and your work-from-home space will come together nicely.

Create Your Own Home Sports Bar

A great way to add more entertainment space to your home is by turning your flex room into your personal sports bar. This is the perfect choice if your extra space is in the basement, but it also works well in any second living room.

The bar itself is the most important part. Take some unfinished base cabinets and plywood, add in your custom countertop (more wood fits the sports bar vibe), and then a weekend of elbow grease, and you have the start of your man cave.

Now comes the rest. Hang your best TV up on the wall. Behind the bar is a great spot, or you can add a sectional and some recliners on the other side of the room so there’s more versatility. Hang up some of your favorite sports memorabilia in frames and on shelves and kick back for the next big game.

Put Together a Movie Theater Vibe

Going to the movie theater with your significant other is always a good date night. But what about bringing the theater home? Turning your flex space into a personal theater is the blockbuster experience everyone in the neighborhood will be jealous of.

First, start with the stairs to your flex space. Replace the stair treads with new ones. Sand them smooth and paint them black. For extra effect, run LED lights along the side of each step.

Then, in the room itself, install a projector and a pull-down screen. For the seating, either set up two rows of couches, the one behind raised on a platform or a group of recliners with plenty of cupholders for drinks and snacks.

Build a Personal Gym

An at-home gym is an excellent way to utilize your flex space and get in shape at the same time. It’s also a very personal project because you can outfit it exactly how you want. No more settling for what gyms want to give you.

Replace the floor with something suitable for a workout area. Then, install your favorite workout gear. That could be a punching bag and a bench press, or cardio machines and dumbbells. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that you want to use so you can take advantage of your flex space over and over again.

As far as setting the vibe of the room, adding rustic elements like a sliding barn door, an unfinished ceiling, or full-length mirrors can help the entire space feel just right for your most intense workouts.
